Another Thing on the Olympic Games…

Something that has always bothered me about the United States is our cultural fascination with vexillology, combined with a total ignorance of heraldry. Believe it or not, the United States of America has an official coat of arms. We do not have to wear a flag on everything. In fact, flags are meant to be flown. They belong on a pole, billowing in the wind. They aren’t meant to be painted, embroidered or pinned onto anything. This looks tacky. Where so many nations’ athletes wear their national coat of arms on their uniforms, we see the athletes of the United States of America proudly wearing a flag. The national coat of arms instead would look much more striking and bold. It would not look like something ironed on as an afterthought. This is because this would be the way the national coat of arms should be displayed.
